Overview


History

The Library of Manipal Tata Medical College, Jamshedpur, was established in 2020, The Library is a two-storied building with 2500.76 sq.m. The library has been fully automated using Koha library management software, and the resources are made available as an online public access catalogue (WEB OPAC).

Objectives:

  • Provide access to resources that support the curriculum and enhance learning outcomes for students.
  • Offer study spaces conducive to collaborative and individual learning.
  • To provide timely, accurate and current information and materials to users for education, teaching and research.
  • Offer resources, tools, and services to support faculty, researchers, and students in conducting research also provide access to academic journals, databases, e-books, and other scholarly resources.
  • Collect, organize, and preserve knowledge in various formats (physical and digital). Facilitate the sharing and dissemination of institutional research and intellectual output.
  • Offer access to computers, software, and technology to support academic activities.
  • Provide digital tools and services, such as online catalogues, databases, and virtual reference assistance.

The library is led by a professionally qualified Librarian, one Assistant Librarian and five Library Assistants who handle the library's daily operations.

Location

Central Library building is in the centre of Manipal Tata Medical College campus. The library is a two-storied building with 2500.76 sq.m.

Rules and Regulations

The library rules and regulations are as follows:

  1. A person desirous of using the library shall enter his/her name, time of entry legibly and sign the register kept at the entrance for the purpose.
  2. Strict decorum and discipline must be maintained in the library. Users must ensure that the rights of other users of the library are not breached in any way by their own acts of omission or commission.
  3. All students who visit the library must produce their student ID Cards on demand.

Books will be issued only on Submission of the ID Card.

  1. Use of cell phones is not allowed. If readers wish to keep them while using the library, it must be switched off/Silent Mode.
  2. Readers must not take sticks, umbrellas, briefcases, boxes, and other such articles into the library. They may be deposited at the library property counter in lockers. The users are advised not to leave expensive items at the property counter.
  3. Books taken out of the shelves must be left on the table. Replacing the books on shelves by users is not encouraged as the books may get misplaced.
  4. Readers should not mark, underline, write, or tear pages or otherwise damage the library documents.
  5. Readers are requested to handle all Library property carefully to avoid damage to it and not to disturb other readers/users.
  6. No library materials can be taken out of the library without the permission of the Librarian/Library Staff.
  7. Photocopying service is available for users at nominal charges.
  8. Anyone who violates the rules and regulations of the library we are taking action from using the library facilities or other punishment duet to breach of law or norms of public order and decency.
  9. Suggestions on all aspects of library services are welcome.

Collection

The Health Sciences Library is dedicated to offering both physical and virtual access to a wide range of resources, including books, journals, databases, and other materials for students, faculty, and researchers. Users can access online materials through the campus network or remotely via OpenAthens using their Office 365 login credentials (learner.manipal.edu or manipal.edu). The book collection is systematically organized on shelves according to the DDC classification system.

The availability of library materials - books, journals and CDs purchased and available in the library- can be checked through the library’s online catalogue the OPAC.

Circulation (Issue and Return)

Books are available for circulation to Undergraduate Students, Junior Resident, Senior Resident, Research Scholars, Faculty Members and Non-Teaching Staffs. However, reference books are for in-house use only.

To enable borrowing, user profiles are created in the library software. Books are loaned for 15 days, with the possibility of an extension if there is no demand for the item from other users.

Students are expected to clear the fines soon after the return or end of the semester.

The circulation rules and regulations are as follows:

  • If books are returned after the due date by the students, fine is collected as per rules (Rs 5 per book for one day) via the SLCM Portal and the record shall be maintained in the fine collection register.
  • If any book borrowed from the library is lost the students/staff must report the same to the circulation section. They are informed to.

2.Pay the present cost of the book.
