Library Overview
History
The EPL Letterhouse (Library of Manipal Centre for European Studies, Department of Philosophy, and Department of Languages) has earlier working under the name Department of European Studies Library. The library started working in the old TAPMI building from December 2009 to December 2018; later shifted to Advanced Research Building from January 2019 to July 2024. At present, the library is working on new premises at the old WGSHA Building (4th Floor). The library has extended to 2582 square feet area.
Objectives
- The library aims to acquire and disseminate the information resources on European Studies, Political Sciences, Economics, International Relations, Higher Education, Social Sciences, Philosophy (including Dvaita, Indian, Eastern, Western philosophy), History, Languages (including foreign language like German, Spanish, French, etc).
- To provide timely, accurate, and up-to-date information and resources.

Administration
The library is led by a professionally qualified Librarian. Apart from the Librarian, there are two supportive staff members who handle the library's daily operations. These staff members are responsible for ensuring users access the necessary reading materials.
Guidelines for the users
- Readers who visit the library should bring their Identity Card.
- The library is kept open from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM (from Monday to Saturday; except MAHE holidays).
- FOUR books can be borrowed for home lending for 15 days.
- Bags, briefcases, and handbags are not allowed inside the library. Such bags, briefcases, handbags, etc., may be left on the property shelf provided in the library.
- Users are advised NOT to keep their valuable things in the library. The library accepts no responsibility for the loss or damage of any articles left.
- Books, journals, etc., taken from the shelves for reading should be left on the tables after use and ‘NOT’ to be replaced on the shelves.
- All books/journals are to be used with care. The student who has the book is responsible for any damage or loss.
- Readers in the library are prohibited from engaging in conversation, misusing the furniture or conducting discussions and marking/highlighting in the library materials (books, journals etc.) in any manner.
- Silence, decorum and discipline must be maintained in the library.
- Smoking, eating, drinking (except water) and sleeping are strictly prohibited in the library.
- Mobiles phones are to be switched off or to be kept on silent mode inside the library.
- People making use of the library shall observe the regulations and general rules of good behavior as set forth in the college calendar.
- Copyright law should be strictly observed by all library users while making copies of library materials.
- Maintenance of library materials (books/journals/magazines, etc) should be treated as a collective responsibility of all the members of the library.
- For information regarding other databases and library resources, you may approach the Librarian or Library Staff.
The above guidelines are subject to periodic review and revision. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in the suspension of library privileges and could lead to disciplinary action by the Institution or University.

Cataloging
The availability of library materials like - books and journals can be checked through the library’s online cataloging, the OPAC.
Library Users
The faculty, students, and researchers of the Manipal Centre for European Studies, Department of Philosophy and Department of Languages are the users of the library. Sometimes, we also allow other MAHE Institutions students, only for reading purposes with their valid MAHE Identity Card.
